Directorate General of Police, Nagaland, Rupin Sharma, IPS unveiled the Police Memorial at NAP Training Centre, Chümoukedima on 16th March 2024, DIPR has informed. The Police Memorial is dedicated to the brave hearts of Nagaland Police who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Speaking on the occasion, DGP Rupin Sharma said that Nagaland Police has a glorious history as one of the Police Forces in the country bestowed with President Colours which is true recognition of “what we have achieved, what we stand and what we have done”. He said that each unit has some form of memorial and are celebrated on Police Commemoration Day on 21st of October every year and that this unveiling of Police Memorial at NAPTC is a small effort.
Sharma pointed that there is a need to have a Central Police Memorial for Nagaland Police as in the State level memorial where all the units of Nagaland can participate together. This will enhance the bond between the police and the public and show that there is no division in terms of tribes, religion, clans or villages. He assured to look into it and work towards it by choosing an appropriate location and manage some funds.
The DGP suggested that the names of the martyrs can be inscribed on the Police Memorial and a booklet or pamphlet be made about the fallen martyrs of Nagaland Police containing a brief account of their martyrdom be made. These will be a befitting tribute, he said.
Expressing that Nagaland Police have done very well so far with good basic training, Sharma stressed the need for better adaptation to new technology and new method of crime on how to manage crime and urged all jawans and personnel of Nagaland Police to take the trainings seriously.
Sharma also emphasized incorporating case study on how ambushes are led or how to escape the ambush in the trainings for jawans. In addition, he informed that they will be incorporating new methods of training curriculum from the NC Level up to Sub-Inspector and Inspector level during the training. With the passing of three criminal laws by the Parliament the Nagaland Police will be trained and re-trained on the new laws as lot of things are going to change in the process. He asserted that Police is not a developmental department he said the role of the Police is to provide a safer platform in the society so that development and other activity of the Government can take place smoothly.
The DGP also informed that there is a plan to set up committee to reward excellent performing personnel immediately and not after the six months. He appealed all personnel of Nagaland to contribute in whatever way they can for the wellbeing of the police as well as for the society.
Commandant, NAPTC, Ben Longkumer, NPS in his speech, stated that the Police Memorial is not only a fitting symbol of sacrifices, contributions and achievements over the years by Nagaland Police but also a gentle reminder to each one of us to make an important bridge between the past, present and the future. The Memorial reflects a shared collective faith, it gives a soul a meaning to loss, a tribute, dedication and positive reminder on due responsibility of all us alive and living to the memories of their death, Longkumer said.
Stating that the memorial is of great significance and not only a respectable and honourable tribute, he said that it truly honours the bravery and sacrifices of our brave hearts. We must share these stories to keep their legacy and braveries alive, he stressed while expressing optimism that this memorial is not only a place to pay tribute but a reminder of the high prices paid by police officers in line of duty. He urged his comrades to take Nagaland Police to greater heights with a revive vision and commitment.
The ceremony included laying of Ceremonial Wreath by DGP Rupin Sharma, IPS and display of Shok Shastra Shraddhanjali Drill. Vote of thanks was delivered by Deputy Commandant (21C & QM) NAPTC, Limikokba Sangtam.
The Dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Pastor, Chümoukedima Police Baptist Church (PBC), Rev. A. Temsu Longkumer.
