2nd SYU Open Futsal Tournament kicks off in Mokokchung

The second edition of the Salangtem Youth Union (SYU) Open Futsal Tournament kicked off today at Mojabi Futsal Turf, Salangtem Ward, Mokokchung. The tournament is organized by the Salangtem Youth Union under the aegis of the Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) with the theme ‘Focus to Endure,’ with Nagaland Minerals and Mines as its official partner.

A total of twenty-two (22) teams are participating in the 2nd edition of the SYU Open Futsal Tournament 2024. The tournament has attracted players from Mokokchung District as well as from outside the district, including Kohima and Dimapur.

Guest of Honour, Chumlamo Humtsoe, ADC, and Administrator of MMC Mokokchung, in his address, firstly congratulated Salangtem Ward for being awarded the cleanest ward of 2023. He expressed hope that the ward’s youth are actively participating in maintaining the cleanliness of both the ward and the town. Additionally, he acknowledged the unity and contributions of the ward’s members and youth in keeping the area clean.

Humtsoe also congratulated the Salangtem Youth Union on the successful completion of the 1st edition of the SYU Open Futsal Tournament, and expressed hope for the success of the 2nd edition. He mentioned renowned football stars like Ronaldo, Messi, and Neymar who have played Futsal, noting its role in sharpening skills and ball control.

Humtsoe emphasized that Futsal can help young players develop their skills and endurance for larger arenas, potentially leading to professional opportunities. He stressed the importance of good behavior on the field, as it builds character and sportsmanship. He encouraged players to incorporate the spirit of sportsmanship and contribute positively to society.

Imnayanger Jamir, Tournament Secretary of MDFA, speaking on behalf of the MDFA President, highlighted in his brief speech that MDFA will provide strong support, including technical amenities, referees, and infrastructures, up to the 3rd edition. He also mentioned the district teams to participate in the Nagaland Futsal Tournament organized by the Nagaland Futsal Association (NFA) annually in August. He emphasized that the President of MDFA expects the tournament to scout skillful players to represent the district.

During his brief speech, Lanuakum, Chairman of Salangtem Ward Council, emphasized the importance of embracing the AI-based world. He stressed the need for specificity, measurability, achievability, and realism in goals, urging youths to act smart and focus on achievable dreams. He encouraged players participating in the tournament to exhibit sportsmanship and encouraged the players coming from different districts and participating in the tournament and sheltering in the ward to maintain Ward’s basic civic sense.

 

In his welcome address, Imnatongzuk, President of SYU, expressed the organization’s aim to provide a platform for youths to showcase their skills and potential. Despite infrastructure and funding limitations compared to other states, he urged youths to pursue their dreams and learn from each other during the three-day tournament.

The inaugural program, chaired by Tiakala Longkumer, Sentimeren Associate Pastor of MTBA, commenced with an invocation by Imnamenla, followed by a special performance. The event also included the introduction of players and the kick-off by the Guest of Honour.
