The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura which are “very likely to get isolated heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy falls (>204.4 mm) on 28th May and heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 29th May 2024”.
The IMD and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India also issued a press release on the depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm “REMAL” over Bangladesh) where it has warned of heavy rainfall in the Northeastern States today. The heavy rainfall is likely to cause landslide, damage of structures and crops and flooding.
“Yesterday’s Cyclonic Storm over Coastal Bangladesh and adjoining Coastal West Bengal moved nearly northwards till afternoon (1430 hours IST) and gradually recurved northeastwards thereafter. It weakened into a deep depression during night (2030 hours IST of 27th May) over Central Bangladesh. Continuing to move further northeastwards, it weakened into a depression over Northeast Bangladesh in the early morning (0530 hours IST) of today, the 28th May, 2024,” stated the press release.
The cyclone further moved east-northeastwards and lay centered at 0830 hours IST today over the same region, near latitude 24.7 °N and longitude 91.5 °E, about 50 km west-northwest of Srimangal (Bangladesh), 70 km south-southwest of Cherrapunji, 90 km north-northeast of Agartala, 100 km south-southwest of Shillong, 130 km west of Silchar (Assam) and 160 km west-southwest of Haflong.
“The system is likely to move east-northeastwards, and weaken into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over Eastern Assam and neighbourhood by evening of today, the 28th May, 2024,” informed the IMD.

- Northeastern States: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places is very likely over Eastern Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram & Tripura and at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur on 28th Isolated extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 20 cm) is also likely over south Assam, Meghalaya & Tripura on 28th May.
Wind Warning: Northeastern States
-Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over Eastern
-Assam and Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely over
-Nagaland, Manipur and remaining parts of Assam till evening of 28th May.
