Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed about the impact of Cyclone Remal in the states of Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura during a review meeting at his residence in New Delhi.

The PMO has said that during the meeting, the PM was updated on the loss of lives and damage to houses and properties due to landslides and floods. He was informed that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed as per the needs and that the teams have carried out evacuation, airlifting and road clearance operations. During the meeting, it was also mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs is in regular touch with the State Governments.

Prime Minister said that the Government of India will continue to extend full support to the State affected by cyclone and also instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs to monitor the situation and review the matter regularly to extend necessary assistance for restoration.

29 bodies have been recovered from various sites across Mizoram and 5 are reportedly still missing. In Aizawl, the Central Committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) has decided to call off the mass search and rescue operations on Monday in Mizoram, AIR Aizawl said.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the death toll from the flood situation in the State has risen to 14 across the 13 districts. The ASDMA has also said that a total of 564 villages have been affected and 39,269 people are in 193 relief camps. A total of 5,35,246 people have been affected, the Authority has informed.

In Meghalaya, 5 people have been reported dead while around 30,000 people from across 558 villages are said to had been affected by the recent heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, many places across Manipur continue to be submerged due to rivers breaching their embankments. “In Manipur, nearly 1.5 lakhs families are affected and four people have died, while one person remains missing,” Chief Minister N Biren Singh had said on Monday.

PM Modi had earlier on 31st May 2024 announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin of each deceased due to the natural disasters in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000 each, he announced.

In Nagaland too, four have died from the effects of the cyclone.
