BY | Monday, 10 June, 2024

On 9th June 2024, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 71 others were administered the Oaths of Office and Secrecy as members of the Council of Ministers. The oaths were administered by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of thousands of guests.

Of the 72, only 7 women found spots in the Union Council of Ministers in the new Indian Government. The previous NDA government featured 10 women ministers and among them two were in the cabinet – former union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and actor turned politician who had defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi seat, Smriti Irani.

In this new government, while Sitharaman has been retained, Irani has been removed.

There are 47,15,41,888 female voters in India. Women make up 48.9% of India’s total electorates.

Former union minister of state, Pratima Bhoumik, who is from Tripura, was also removed. Former minister of state Meenakshi Lekhi has also been removed.

The other women ministers are Savitri Thakur, Nimuben Bambhaniya, Raksha Khadse, Shobha Karandlaje and Anupriya Patel.

The portfolios are expected to be announced shortly.
