State Level Workshop on “Promotion of Scientific Cattle Production in Nagaland” underway in Medziphema

Medziphema: Advisor Kazheto Kinimi suggests necessity to conserve Thutho cattle

ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh and ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland in collaboration with Dimapur District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, Nagaland (Dimul) organized a State Level workshop on “Promotion of Scientific Cattle Production in Nagaland” on 25th June, 2024 at ICAR-NRC on Mithun in Medziphema, informed DIPR.

Kazheto Kinimi, Advisor for Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, graced the event as the Chief Guest, conveyed his gratitude to ICAR-NRC Mithun and opined that today’s workshop on promotion of scientific cattle production in Nagaland state was one instance of initiatives which is essential for discussion through scientific platforms. He also gave the various reasons on why it should be discussed, such as our local cattle being low yielded, elite cross breed cattle being expensive, total mixed ration, etc. needs to be explored and easing management of cattle production at the farmers’ level. Kinimi cited all issues to be addressed.

He also suggested the necessity to conserve Thutho cattle which is the local indigenous cattle available in the state.

He specifically addressed his concern to ADG (Animal Health) ICAR, New Delhi on the frequent outbreaks of ASF (African Swine Flu) in Nagaland which is causing economic losses. Sohe urged ADG to fast treat a preventive measure for ASF, so that we overcame this manic.

In conclusion, he wished the workshop a grand success and hoped that it yields results and wishes and hope that together through this platform organized by NRC Mithun will go a long way in transforming cattle production in Nagaland.

In the first technical session Director ICAR- CIRC Meerut, Dr. A.K.Mohanty briefed on the role of cattle in food and nutritional security in India. Common diseases of cattle and their control measure by Dr. Ashok Kumar, ADH (AH), ICAR, New Delhi, and feeding practices for maximizing cattle production in North East India by Dr. S.K Verma, PS, ICAR-CIRC, Meerut.

In the second technical session, advanced reproduction technologies for augmenting cattle productivity in NER was detailed by Dr. Suresh Kumar Dhoop Singh, Principal Scientist & Head, ICAR-CIRC Meerut, and valve addition technologies to enhance farmers’ income and promote entrepreneurship in NER by Rajeev Ranjan Kumar, Scientist ICAR-CIRC, Meerut.

A farmer-scientist interaction was also organized where many farmers actively raised their problems in livestock. Input materials were also distributed to the farmers.  Farmers from various parts of Nagaland, representatives from the milk union of Nagaland, officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Scientists and Directors ICAR, Veterinarians, progressive farmers, service providers in the dairy sector and different experts participated in the event.
