The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung on July 12 requesting for the appointment of a nominee from the business community to the Municipal and Town Councils in Mokokchung District.
Congratulating the Government of Nagaland and the State Election Commission on the successful conduct of the first-ever civic elections under the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023, the MCCI also acknowledged th government for ensuring peaceful and successful conduct of the ULB elections in the district.
With the members of the Municipal and Town Councils elected and sworn in, and the process for composing the Municipal and Town Councils in Mokokchung underway, the MCCI has requested for the inclusion of at least one member from the business community in the councils.
“The business community of Mokokchung district would like to request your esteemed office to ensure that at least one member from the business community is nominated to the Mokokchung Municipal Council, Changtongya Town Council, Tuli Town Council, and Mangkolemba Town Council as nominees under Sections 10 (3) and 22 (4) of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023,” stated the MCCI.

As almost all revenue for the Municipal/Town Councils is collected from or through the business community, the MCCI expressed belief that it is reasonable for the business community to be represented by a nominee to ensure smooth local self-governance.
“Additionally, it is beneficial to have a representative from the business community to assist the Council in understanding market dynamics and economics for smooth administration. Further, as this is the first-ever implementation of the NMA 2023, we believe it is important to ensure that the business community is represented by a nominee in the respective Municipal/Town Councils in the best interest of the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), as many precedents will be set during this time,” maintained the MCCI.
