Indian secures fourth position at International Mathematical Olympiad 2024

The India team of six students made history by achieving the fourth position at the International Maths Olympiad 2024, considered India’s best performance so far. The Indian contingent brought home four gold medals and one silver medal. The 65th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) was held at the University of Bath, UK.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country.

Announcing the news on social media platform X, the Homi Baba Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) stated, “India makes history at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2024! With 4 Golds, 1 Silver & 1 Hon. Mention, + an overall 4th place among 108 countries, this is Team India’s BEST performance since we started participating in 1989. CONGRATULATIONS all students/mentors.”

The 6 student winners are Adhitya, Ananda, Kanav, Rushil (Gold), Arjun (Silver), Siddharth (HM). The leaders were Krishnan Sivasubramanian, and Rijul Saini, while the Observers were Rohan Goyal and Mainak Ghosh.

US secured the first position, followed by China, and South Korea in the second and third positions.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also expressed immense joy and pride over India’s exceptional performance in the International Maths Olympiad, where the country secured its best-ever 4th place finish.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “It’s a matter of immense joy and pride that India has come 4th in its best-ever performance in the International Maths Olympiad. Our contingent has brought home 4 Golds and one Silver Medal. This feat will inspire several other youngsters and help make mathematics even more popular.”

Ananda Bhaduri who secured gold for India hails from Guwahati, Assam. Announcing on X, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam posted, “Heartiest congratulations to Assam’s son, Master Ananda Bhaduri on clinching a Gold at the International Maths Olympiad and being part of the Indian team as they achieved its best ever ranking at the Olympiad. Congratulations to all the other winners from the Indian squad for their tremendous performance. Their achievements will inspire lakhs of students to shed their fear of Maths and embrace it wholeheartedly.”

According to a press release by the IMO 2024, the the Olympiad witnessed the participation of 600 competitors from more than 110 countries.

“The IMO is the largest and most prestigious of all the international olympiads, bringing together the brightest young minds from around the world. The event represents the culmination of many years of mathematical endeavour and hundreds of attempts at solving incredibly complex problems,” it stated.

The competition Involves teams of up to six contestants (aged between 14-18 years old) sitting two exams on consecutive days. Each exam lasts 4.5 hours, containing three tough problems. Contestants are awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, as well as Honourable Mentions for good effort.

About International Mathematical Olympiad 

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. The IMO Board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO.

IMO 2024 is being delivered as a charitable programme by Ark Ventures. The event will be overseen by a governing board comprising Dr Ceri Fiddes, who was Executive Director of IMO 2019 and obtained her Maths PhD at the University of Bath, IMO Board member, Dr Geoff Smith and Ben Cartledge, Director at Ark Ventures.
