Akumla Pongen, President, Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee, attended the “Nari Nyay Andolan” held at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, organised by the All India Mahila Congress on July 29. This was updated in a press release issued by the NPCC Communication Department.
The Andolan is a Nationwide Movement for Social and Economic Justice for the Womenfolk of the Nation and will continue till the Central Government accedes to the demands.
Its three core demands are:
- Under political empowerment and greater participation of women in policy making and governance, the Women’s Reservation Act has to be immediately implemented in both Parliament and the State Legislative Assemblies, while ensuring proportionate reservation and participation of our sisters from the OBC and the most backward classes.

- Under economic empowerment, to provide relief to half of the country’s population who are fighting a painful battle against the scourges of rising inflation and unemployment on a daily basis, we demand that the Central Government adopt the Mahalaxmi Yojana, a financial assistance scheme targeting the women of the Nation promised by the Congress Party under its Nari Nyay Guarantee, and start transferring Rs 8,500 per month (or Rs 1,00,000 annually) directly to the bank accounts of one woman from every poor family in the country.
- Right to social justice and security. Crimes against women across the country are continuously on the rise and the fear of the Law among the criminals is waning, the latest example of this being the tragic incident where two women were buried alive in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, putting the entire country to shame. Cases of murder, rape, gang rape and other heinous crimes against women are being reported across the Nation with little signs of abatement anytime soon.
The Movement will commence from the Capital of our Nation, New Delhi, and spread throughout the length and breadth of the Nation till our Demands are fulfilled and Justice is served, informed the NPCC.
