So-Li-Sü, a dynamic ensemble of nine artists formed in 2024, has made a significant mark on the theatre scene with their debut play, “Süngra.” After an impressive residential workshop and show in Ungma earlier this year on January 27, “Süngra” was chosen to perform at the prestigious Abhinaya National Theatre Festival, held from August 1st to 3rd in Hyderabad.
“Süngra,” a profound exploration of the Ao community’s evolution from the Six Stones, was met with critical acclaim. The play, directed by Kilangtemsu Imsong, delves into the role of Lijaba, the God of land, in nurturing the community and underscores the cultural significance of the Hornbill Bird among the Ao’s. Through its rich narrative, “Süngra” emphasizes the traditions, culture, and identity of the Ao people, illustrating their unique chronicles and the survival tactics of their ancestors.
One of the play’s poignant highlights is its depiction of the headhunting era, portraying the internal turmoil it caused. Despite the chaos, the play honours the sacrifices made by ancestors to create a tapestry of resilience and beauty that defines the Ao community today. “Süngra” is not just a historical recount; it is a celebration of the Ao identity, filled with lullabies and folk songs that evoke a deep sense of pride and continuity.
The meticulous costume and prop for the ‘Süngra” was design by Temjensunep and Salong which added an authentic visual appeal to the production.
Kilangtemsu Imsong, the founder and director of So-Li-Sü, is a celebrated figure in theatre and films, having graduated from the National School of Drama and received the NEZCC Young Talented Award in 2017.
So_Li_Sü extends heartfelt gratitude to the individuals and families who generously sponsored the group’s journey, making it possible for them to share their heritage and artistry on such a renowned platform.
