The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has called for ‘IMMEDIATE SHUTTER DOWN’ in all Angami inhabited areas from 10th August 2024 (Saturday) in protest against the physical assault on its President by the Assam Rifles.

The ASU has stated in a press release that its President, Khriesamhalie David Mere, was physically assaulted by the Assam Rifles at D Block, Kohima on 9th August 2024 (Friday) at around 12:30 pm “without any reason”. The student body alleged that the 13th Assam Rifle jawan(s) not only physically assaulted the ASU President, but also intended to hit him with the rifle butt, thereby harassing the ASU President.

“The Angami Students’ Union hereby calls for an IMMEDIATE SHUTTER DOWN in all Angami Inhabited Areas and INDEFINITE BANDH with effect from the 10th August,” Vice President Thejalhoukho Thomas Khawakhrie and General Secretary Vimeyiekho Vitso stated in the press release.

The ASU has also “directed and warned” all paramilitary forces in general and the Assam Rifles in particular to abstain from plying through the Angami inhabited areas with immediate effect. “… those camps within our jurisdiction must immediately refrain from coming out from their designated camps until further notice”, it added.
