The ANCSU Collegiate Meet 2024 concluded today with its Valedictory Session at Livingstone Foundation International College in Dimapur. The session was graced by S. Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), as the Valedictory Guest. Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of Youth Resources & Sports, Government of Nagaland, attended as the Honoured Guest, while Vimeyekho Vitso, Tribunal General of the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU), chaired the session.

In his address, MP Supongmeren Jamir emphasized the theme “Enabling Potentialities” and the importance of identifying opportunities in Nagaland. He noted that while education levels among youth in the state are relatively high, many graduates face challenges in securing jobs that align with their qualifications, often resulting in underemployment or migration to other states in search of better prospects.

Jamir highlighted that qualified individuals frequently seek employment outside Nagaland due to the state’s uncompetitive salary structure, stating, “On average, the starting salary for a fresher in a private organization in Nagaland is two times lower than in states like New Delhi.” He pointed out that this disparity creates a significant barrier for local talent to negotiate salaries effectively.

Despite these challenges, Jamir acknowledged the burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit in Nagaland, citing over 300 registered startups and five incubators under Startup Nagaland. He noted the existence of more than 28,274 registered MSMEs on the Udyam portal, but stressed that the majority are micro enterprises, with only 17 large enterprises in the state. He expressed concern over the barriers these enterprises face, including infrastructure issues, limited access to capital, and a lack of knowledge regarding project viability.

“In every limitation lies an opportunity for a solution,” he asserted, adding that curiosity often drives innovation. He encouraged the audience to foster a mindset of learning, driven by adversity and curiosity, to explore the possibilities within their surroundings.

Jamir highlighted the role of content creators in Nagaland, noting the diverse topics they cover on platforms like YouTube and Instagram. He observed, “While many channels thrive on travel, food, and personal expressions, there are untapped areas such as makeup tutorials, agriculture, and programming that present market opportunities.”

He cited the efforts of local content creators like The Yatra Kid, who is conducting online sessions on college applications and scholarships, as a model for knowledge sharing. He challenged the youth to create platforms where discussions about jobs, salaries, and opportunities could take place.

Emphasizing the importance of ownership in addressing these challenges, Jamir stated, “It is not enough to recognize the gap; we must also act to fill it.” He called for a culture of ownership where individuals take responsibility for their actions, whether in personal tasks or professional endeavors.

The MP concluded by offering his support to anyone interested in creating educational YouTube channels, pledging to sponsor the necessary equipment. He encouraged the audience, stating, “If you want to wish someone well, say ‘Own it!'” He urged the youth to embrace ownership, strive for innovation, and take risks as they shape the future of Nagaland.

Jamir congratulated the attendees, urging them to celebrate their achievements and acknowledge the support they had received. “Go forth with courage, integrity, and a commitment to making the world a better place,” he encouraged.
