Nagaland gears up for transition to sustainable solar power production

Chief Minister, Dr. Neiphiu Rio officially launched the Nagaland Solar Mission for installation of residential Roof Top Solar (RTS) in convergence with the Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG:MBY) in the presence of Minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs K. G. Kenye, at Chief Minister’s Office, Nagaland Civil Secretariat, Kohima on 14th April 2025.

Addressing at the launching program Dr. Rio said that Nagaland Government has taken major step to address power deficits faced across the state by launching the solar mission. Rio said to further support the green energy revolution the State Government has decided to support this initiative through an additional State subsidy of upto ₹ 50,000 for upto 3Kw provided through budgetary support. Rio added that additional support from the State will greatly help in realizing the target of the Government of India under PMSG: MBY to install 1 crore Roof Top Solar (RTS) on mission mode by 2026-27.

Rio also stated the State and the Central Government subsidy together will cover most of the cost of installing solar power for households. He added that besides installation, the power produced and supplied to the grid will enable households to reduce the electricity bills as well. Rio, therefore, urged the citizens of Nagaland to avail this opportunity and reap the benefits of transition to sustainable solar power production.

Minister of Power & Parliamentary Affairs K G Kenye delivering a short speech said that with the additional State subsidy provided by the Government, the access to rooftop solar installation will be affordable and thus anticipates a positive response and contribution of the public to achieve the objective of Nagaland’s green energy revolution. He expressed confidence that through this initiative the chronic power shortages in the state will mitigate to a large extent and usher in the required social economic development for the citizens of Nagaland.

Overview of the project was presented by Secretary, Power Department, Asangla Imti, IAS followed by Power Point Presentation presented by Department Official. The launching Program was attended by Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton,  Chief Secretary Nagaland,  Dr. J Alam, IAS, Home Commissioner, Vyasan R, IAS,  AHoDs and senior officials from Power Department.

The department further Informed that as per the latest data, 247 applications have already been received online to avail the scheme. To provide smooth installation, 55 (fifty five) National and State vendors are also available in the State.
