NCC cadets from eight districts are participating in a training programme under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS) at NCC Training Camp, Wokha.

The opening ceremony of the training camp was held today where a total of 700 cadets are participating. The camp is being conducted in two separate batches—the first from July 15 to 24 and second from July 26 to August 4.

The programme is organized by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in collaboration with the Home Guards & Civil Defence (HG & CD), Wokha, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Instructors from the SDRF and HG & CD, Wokha, have been deployed to conduct the training sessions, while three Trainers of Trainers (ToT) under NSDMA are serving as key resource persons.

The programme includes both theoretical and practical components. Echung Konyak S, Company Commander, led sessions on the basic concepts of disaster management and community-based first aid, while Sub-Inspector Mhonyamo and SDRF instructors facilitated demonstrations on bleeding control and wound care.

Cadets are being trained in a range of life-saving techniques and emergency response strategies. These include handling musculoskeletal injuries and splinting, administering basic life support, responding to earthquake and landslide situations, as well as lifting and moving casualties safely. Fire safety training, including the types and proper use of fire extinguishers, is also being provided. Participants are learning rope rescue techniques, various types of knots and lashings, and how to construct rescue equipment such as pickets, denricks, sheers and gyns.

A significant portion of the training focuses on flood and water-related disasters. Cadets are being trained in the use of life jackets, lifelines, and life buoys, along with methods for throwing breast lines and conducting both dry and wet rescue operations. Practical sessions also cover the construction of improvised rafts and swimming aids, flood rescue drills, and outdoor exercises involving outboard motors (OBMs). Cadets are also becoming familiar with OBM components, their functioning and operation, types of boats, paddling techniques, and rowing commands.

The training culminates with a combined service class for cadets undergoing the YAMS programme and those participating in the ongoing Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC-68).
