An electric bike invented in Noklak was launched by Wheels of Nagas (WON) micro enterprise under Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME).
The launch was held under the theme of ‘Not Guns but Machines’ at Noklak SP office today.
The launch of the electric two-wheeler was done in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Noklak Hiazu Meru and Superintendent of Police (SP) Noklak Dr Pritpal Kaur, along with the two inventors, Tumong and Khumeng.
Dr Kaur in her speech stated that innovative ideas can redirect young people from abusive substances and illegal activities. She urged the youths to work hard and make productive assets for the district.
This is not only the victory of the inventors alone but of everyone, Kaur added.
Deputy Commissioner Hiazu Meru declared that this was a historic day. Stating that the talents of the Noklak people need to be motivated and polished further, he urged the youths to uplift the society.
The president of the Khiamniungan Tribal Council, Thangou, stated that potentials should be utilised in innovating legal products instead of weapons.
Tumong and Khumeng, the inventors of the electric bike, shared their experience of inventing the bike, highlighting the struggles and challenges they faced. They also thanked the people who supported them.
36-year-old Tumong worked as an electrician for ten years. Although material and financial challenges were a setback, his experience in this field helped in his understanding of how to invent an electric bike. He had previously built a cooking cum drying machine and oil extraction machine.
It was the president of Thang Range Public Organization, Hangthing, who introduced Tumong to SP Noklak Dr Kaur who in turn assigned DEF Noklak P Khumeng to assist Tumong in his work.
“I decided to motivate and assist Tumong in this work, but it was me who received discouragement from others,” Khumeng shared. Some had asked him to simply be satisfied with his job as a policeman.
Tumong also shared that not many people had believed in what he was doing but he persevered. The duo put their heads together and worked towards inventing the first electric bike of Nagaland.
The assistance of SP Noklak Dr Kaur helped in launching the bike as a Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) under the brand Wheels of Nagas (WON).
Hangthing, in his vote of thanks, expressed that it was a dream fulfilled and added that this was a new dawn for Nagaland.
The Electrical Bike (WON) is 3ft 6in in height, 4ft and 6in in length and weighs 37kg. It runs on a 250-volt motor and can carry a weight of 120-130kg and cover 25km/hour.
