The Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has underlined the critical importance of fire safety measures in all business establishments and public spaces, calling fire extinguishers a “vital equipment for safeguarding lives and property.”
While fully supporting the need for proper installation and maintenance of fire safety devices, the Federation asserted that the responsibility of ensuring fire safety—including the inspection, monitoring, and maintenance of fire extinguishers—should rest primarily with the Fire & Emergency Services Department, which possesses the technical expertise to handle such matters.
In a press release, the DUCCF stated that the Fire Brigade is the competent authority to enforce fire safety norms, conduct inspections, and provide training on fire prevention and emergency response. “While DUCCF respects the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) for its concern on public safety, we believe that enforcement in this specific matter should be coordinated closely with the Fire Department. This would ensure that business establishments are not unnecessarily burdened with overlapping checks and compliances from multiple agencies,” the statement read.

The Federation further urged the authorities to adopt a balanced approach by giving equal priority to civic necessities such as sanitation, drainage, traffic management, and hygiene, which remain pressing concerns for traders and the general public.
Emphasizing that a safe and healthy business environment can only be achieved through interdepartmental cooperation, DUCCF appealed to both the DMC and the Fire & Emergency Services Department to streamline responsibilities and work hand in hand for the welfare and safety of Dimapur’s residents.
