A new building for PM SHRI Government Middle School, L Khel, Kohima Village, was officially inaugurated on November 3 in a ceremony at the L Khel Indoor Stadium.
Presiding as the Special Guest, Advisor, School Education and SCERT, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome reflected on the school’s storied history and stated a lot of leaders were from this school.
“We have a perception that only poor students go to government school, and we need to change this mindset,” Dr Yhome stated and highlighted the urgent need for more higher secondary schools in the capital.
Dr Yhome outlined a roadmap for progress, focusing on infrastructure, administration, and systemic reform. He specifically identified GMS L Khel as the middle school in Kohima with the most potential to be upgraded to a high school—a critical need in the capital. He also announced plans for a modernized curriculum featuring 21st-century skills and textbooks incorporating locally relevant content like the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and Naga history.

Neingusalie Khruomo, the building committee treasurer, reported that the new building was completed in eight months despite a two-month funding delay and the challenge of leveling a steep, three-tiered site. He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and appealed for the swift release of remaining funds to clear pending dues for the ₹79.2 lakh project.
The ceremony was blessed by a dedication prayer from Rev Keviyiekielie Linyü and featured speeches from school and community leaders, as well as a special performance by the students.
