A Golden Legacy: GHSS Noklak celebrates a 50 year journey

Noklak: School established in 1951 with Opanglenden Ao as first teacher

Government Higher Secondary School, Noklak, commemorating 50 remarkable years of dedication and service under the theme ‘A Golden Legacy’ on 25th October 2024 at the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Stadium, Noklak. The milestone event, attended by esteemed dignitaries and pioneers, reflected on its humble beginning and achievements of the past and future goal.  Presently, the school has an enrolment of 560 students.

P. Longon, MLA, who is an alumnus of the institution and a former teacher, graced the event as Special Guest. In his speech, he remarked that the school played a significant role in shaping his lives. He urged the parents and the alumni to engage with the student community in collaboration with the school authority to inspire the students with real-world experiences and stories.
Pointing out the various issues and challenges faced by government run schools such as proxy teachers, low enrolment, etc, the MLA regretted that these issues have severely damaged the image of government schools and the noble profession of teaching and created negative public perception. He added that these issues have a far reaching financial implications on the families of low-income groups and called for dedicated teachers willing to serve the least privilege of the society. Longon also urged the school authorities to utilise financial grants judiciously for the betterment of the school.

While the government has also failed in certain areas, the MLA said that it is noteworthy to mention that the Department of School Education is implementing projects to assist the capacities of schools.

Earlier, MLA Longon unveiled the monolith and released the souvenir.

EAC Noklak, Bangjunglemba, delivering the Deputy Commissioner’s message, stated that the Golden Jubilee is a testament to the dedication that have defined the institution over the past years. While reflecting the school’s illustrious history, he acknowledged the pioneers, teachers and students for their hard work and excellence. The school’s legacy is built on academic excellence and ethical formation and innovation, he added.

Er. Leyang, Additional Chief Engineer & Head of Department, PHED, an alumnus of GHSS Noklak, remarked that the school has brought up many good students and achieved great heights and urged the teachers to maintain the same spirit in the days to come. He encouraged the students to walk in the right path with clear mindset, hard work and honesty. Er Leyang also said that students should avoid taking intoxicated substance and indulging in other unethical activities. Further, he urged upon the students to learn respect to elders, parents and teachers.

Shangchiu, President, Khiamniungan Students Union (KSU), lauded the school for producing esteemed personalities in the society and reminded the community to inspire the younger generation to allow the golden legacy to shine.

Earlier, the event was chaired by Arenkaba and Tsuwing Khiamniungan, invocation by Pastor Penglang, NTBC, while the jubilee greetings and felicitation were done by M Ngou, Convenor, Planning Board. The program also included Quartet by GHSS Students, special prayer was pronounced by Rev. Hempao, Executive Secretary, KBCA, special presentation by the School Choir, vote of thanks by Y Kongkhao Lushing, Principal GHSS and benediction by Pastor M Thengio, KBC

THE BIRTH AND CHRONOLOGY OF GOVERNMENT HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL NOKLAK 1974-2024

With the establishment of civil administration in Noklak in the year 1951, the need to have an educational institution was felt by the people of Khiamniungan. The inception of educational institution triggered the minds of some local leaders as one of the enormous need not only the Khiamniungan but an inclusive educational institution for all Under the valiant initiation of local leaders, all the citizens of Noklak, Nokyan Village etc. extended their help to establish by freely contributing with all the resources that they can offer physically, mentally and financially.

In the year 1951, the first Lower Primary School was established by the 3rd Assam Rifle and it was later taken over by the Government in the following year 1952. Shri Opanglenden Ao was the first teacher appointed by the Government where he began to teach his students in Ao dialect.

Gradually, Lower Primary School was upgraded to class IV, V and VI in three consecutive years ie., 1959, 1960 and 1961. It was then upgraded to Government Middle School in the year 1962 till class VI with Shri Moses posted as Head Master.

In the year 1971, some of the public leaders felt the urgent need of upgrading Class VII. With this pressing priority Shri H Thangpong, Board Chairman and the then RCM (Regional Council Member) and Shri Thangsoi, Secretary on 25th March 1971 convened a meeting with some area leaders to discuss on the upgradation of Middle School to full-fledged High School and at the same time, a resolution was adopted on how they would manage class VII and VIII. Based on the resolution, Class VII and VIII was upgraded in the year 1971 and 1972. However, the two classes were managed by the local community for 2 years where Shri P Lalhming Thanga BA and Shri SR Dhar BA were assigned to be the first private teachers. Their salary was paid from the contributions of Rs 3/- from every household from every village under Noklak jurisdiction. Subsequently, the class VIII students from GMS Noklak appeared their board exam at Longkhim Centre, Tuensang in the year 1973.

On 25th March 1974, Government Middle School was taken over by the Government as full-fledged Government High School. Shri KC Abraham BA was the first Government appointed Headmaster in which the school was able to produce matriculation in the year 1977.

High School Noklak celebrated its 25 years of its birth on 26th October 1999 with the joint venture of teachers, students, government officers and leaders from different organizations.

After 33 long years of waiting and managing the full-fledged GHS Noklak, it was then upgraded to Government Higher Secondary School in the year 2007 with Arts stream. Shri Hoshito Sema was the first principal and 12 PGTs were also appointed. In the first year of upgradation (2008), 33 students were enrolled in class 11 (Arts) as the first batch. The first HSSLC examination was held in the year 2010 where 3 students got through their exams with favourable outcomes.

Furthermore, in 2024, Science Stream was introduced where 10 students got admitted in class 11 (Science) as the first batch with Shri Y Kongkhao as Principal and Shri T Mucho Khiamniungan as Vice Principal. 5 PGT (Science) were assigned by the Government for a short period of time as double assignment task before the actual appointment of PGT (Science) was made.

At present, Government Higher Secondary School comprises of Class 6-12 with Arts and Science stream.

Today, GHSS Noklak is celebrating its 50 years Golden Jubilee with a feeling of wholeness and accomplishment despite inexpressible challenges faced from the creation of this educational institution to full-fledged Government Higher Secondary School.

We, the GHSS Noklak take this auspicious moment to thank our Almighty God and everyone who were once a part of this beautiful institution and who are still taking part for this progressive institution. May God bless you all and let us all continue to support and willingly serve this lone Government Higher Secondary School in Noklak District with a vision “Towards New Horizon”.
