Advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation, Government of Nagaland, Imkong L Imchen marked a dual milestone as he celebrated his 75th birthday and 25 years of service as an elected legislator (five consecutive terms) from the 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency in Mokokchung District. The celebration was held at his native village Mangmetong, surrounded by family, party workers, well-wishers and supporters.

In an emotional address, Imchen reflected on his life’s journey, beginning with his birth on June 15, 1950. “On that day, a child was born in Mangmetong, and they named him Imkongliba — that fellow is me, whom you see today,” he said. “My parents didn’t even have cloth to wrap my body with. That was the situation I was born into.”

He recalled how Mangmetong village had been completely burned to ashes around that time, leaving his family with nothing but a “house made with leaves.” The memory, he said, was a reminder of how far both he and the community had come. He also spoke about his troubled childhood, describing how he struggled with violent tendencies and destructive habits.

“From my early years, I was criminal-minded, criminal in intention and personality. Violence was my nature; smoking and drinking were like food to me. According to my own estimation, I was one of the most criminal-minded individuals among the Nagas of my generation. And yet, Jesus loved me more than others—that I know,” he testified, giving all glory to God for where he is today.

Recalling his political journey, Imchen shared how he first contested in the 2003 Assembly Election from Mangmetong village. At that time, he lacked a strong support base within his own village, but Chungtia village extended their full support, standing firmly behind him despite his non-native status.

“Chungtia village told me, ‘Even if you are not from our village, seeing your position and situation in your village, we will support you fully.’ That assurance lifted me, and gradually, support grew day by day, both in my own village and elsewhere,” he recalled.

Imchen humbly acknowledged God’s guidance throughout his political career. “Many people long to be elected even once in their lifetime, but I have been blessed to be elected five times, serving 25 years as a legislator. This is nothing but God’s grace upon Mangmetong village and my life,” he said. He added that it was also a special moment as his 75th birthday coincided with Father’s Day, making the occasion even more meaningful.

He shared how his favorite hymn, He Leadeth Me, has been his anchor throughout life’s trials, firmly believing that God had prepared a better place for him even before he was born. “This song has led me thus far,” he said, with deep emotion.

In his brief greetings, Lima Imchen, President of Dimapur Mangmetong Senso Union, acknowledged that from 2003 until now, it has been solely by God’s grace that Imkong L Imchen has reached this remarkable milestone.

He urged the gathering to reflect on the transformation of Koridang constituency — how it was before 2003 and the progress made since then in political, economic, and developmental aspects. He also fondly acknowledged the Advisor’s wife as his “best advisor,” for her constant support and guidance. On this occasion, he encouraged everyone to treat the celebration of 75 years of life and 25 years of legislative service as a time to seek forgiveness, receive blessings, and move forward together as one community.

Kikatemba, Secretary of Mangmetong Village Council said that Mangmetong is a village chosen by God, as believed by their forefathers. Over the years, the village has produced many scholars, missionaries, leaders, and prominent personalities. While many have since passed on, he expressed gratitude that their leader, Imkong L Imchen, remains healthy and blessed at 75 years of age.

Recalling the village’s political history, he mentioned that during the early years of Nagaland’s statehood, Tajen Ao from Mangmetong was elected three consecutive times (1964, 1969, and 1974), but chose to forgo his MLA position to join the Naga underground movement for the cause of Naga freedom.

He further highlighted that today, Imkong L Imchen has successfully served five consecutive terms since 2003, becoming the first Minister from Mangmetong village. Reflecting on his 25-year political journey, Kikatemba acknowledged both the good and challenging times that have passed and also expressed appreciation for the selfless support of Imchen’s wife, who played a significant role in guiding the Koridang party leaders along with Imchen during his political career.
