“There was no foul play with regard to the case of the two youths from Assam who were found dead in Mon district of Nagaland and there is no attempt to hide anything. This is no secret of what happened, it was a very terrible accident where two people lost their lives,” stated Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma, today while addressing a press conference at PHQ.

The recovery of the bodies of the two persons hailing from Assam from Angjangyang sub division under Mon district on 25th September 2023 had caused outrage and misgivings on the nature of their death.

The deceased identified as Latil Nowholia and Utpal Tassa, both residents of Sonari area in Assam were reportedly killed in an accident.

Sharma pointed out that the preliminary objection from Assam side was of the post mortem not being conducted which led to the suspicion of foul play.

The office of the Deputy Commissioner, in a press release, clarified that a missing complaint was filed by the vehicle owner on 25 September 2023 at Aboi Police Station under Mon district. “Based on the missing complaint, a search operation led by Officer-in-Charge, Police Station was conducted.” During the search operation, the vehicle and two bodies were retrieved on 25th September 2023 from the accident site, 200 feet below the road between Angjangyang and Longching under Mon district, confirmed the statement issued by Ronsenmenla, NCS, SDO (C) (HQ) and Nodal Officer, Media Cell Office of the Deputy Commissioner.

Accordingly, due procedure was followed and postmortem was conducted at the District Hospital, Mon. After observing all necessary formalities, the bodies were handed over to the family members on 26th September 2023, the statement added.

“The doctors who were present said that it was an apparent case of accident and not other wise. The doctor in Mon said that the cause of dead was very apparent because of the injury to the head, it was smashed very badly. So, that was the reason why the regular post mortem was not conducted,” affirmed DGP Sharma.

To rule out foul play even at this stage, according to the DGP, there is nothing that prevents the Assam Police, Government or the people from undertaking post mortem.

The Mon District administration also confirmed that based on the official reports, the incident was “completely a case of unfortunate vehicle accident and no case of foul play is linked with it”. It further appealed to all concerned to refrain from circulating any misinformation relating to the incident.
