Accelerating the achievement of gender equality: International Widow’s Day observed at Noklak

Hope Channel in collaboration with Nagaland State Cooperative Bank ( NStCB)  and Noklak Town Baptist Church celebrated International Widow’s Day. A first of its  kind in Noklak, the Day was observed under the theme ‘Accelerating the achievement of gender equality’ on June 18 at Noklak Town Baptist Church .

Guest of Honour, Dr Watila Jamir, Principal Integrated Extension Training Centre ( IETC) & Director State Agriculture Management and Extension Training Institute ( SAMETI) indicated the  grievences and stigmas faced in the society by the widows. “It is high time to recognize them in the policy making,” she added. Jamir said that International Widow’s is a day dedicated to recognize millions of widows around the world who have lost their spouses and who often face so many challenges and injustices as a result. Jamir further said that this day which is observed by the United Nation is not merely a moment of reflection but to call for action for each person to stand in solitary with widows for better tomorrow. Jamir,  who is a widow herself encouraged the widows through the  experience she shared  on how she would take refuge in Jesus Christ as a single mother. Jamir said that the stigmas faced by widows is a global issue which requires urgent attention.

Special Guest, Kathyinla Extra Asst. Commissioner Noklak said that the UN scheduled June 23 to observe International Widow’s Day with the purpose to bring out the voices of wodows in the forefront.

With the rise of  stigmas on widows in Nagaland’s context, the EAC called for change of perspectives. She lauded the single mothers in Noklak for their hard working nature despite every challenges. She also urged that such programs should be attended not by the widows alone but every one in the society.

A special prayer for the single mothers was pronounced by Pastor A.  Penglang, Noklak Town Baptist Church.  Earlier, the program was chaired by Thongkoi LS , invocation by Thingpia Asso. Pastor Women Baptist Church Thang, special number was presented by Jumie Lam, vote of thanks by Tiakala Amri, Director, Hope Channel and Benediction by  Laam Associate Pastor Noklak Town Baptist Church.
