On the second day of the eighth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, MLA Achumbemo Kikon raised the issue of racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in mainland India during Zero Hour, describing it as a matter of serious concern.

Kikon said the issue deeply affects the people of the region and carries strong sentiments within the House, particularly among members of regional political parties. He stressed that a clear message must be conveyed to mainland India that the people of the Northeast are equal stakeholders in the nation’s progress and democracy.

“For the progress of the country and the strengthening of democracy, we are all part of this nation. Such discrimination against our people cannot be tolerated,” he asserted.

He also referred to the rendition of Vande Mataram preceding the national anthem during the previous day’s proceedings, stating that the matter could be taken forward in discussions on the Governor’s address.

Kikon further emphasized that the sense of the House must be firmly articulated and that the constitutional guarantees under the Fundamental Rights must be upheld, honoured and strengthened to ensure justice and equality for all citizens.
