With the rest of the world, the Governor of Nagaland La Ganesan, along with the officers and staffs of Raj Bhavan, Kohima and Kohima Forest Division observed the World Environment Day on the theme ‘Solution to Plastic Pollution’ today at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima.
Speaking at the function, the Governor said that World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June to spread awareness about the environment and the need to conserve it. He said that global environmental issues such as climate change, deforestation and pollution are affecting everyone in our daily lives. He, therefore urged upon the people to conserve the environment and treat it as top priority to save our planet.

Mentioning on the World Environment Day theme, the Governor reminded to all the citizens that the world’s actions on plastic pollution is the need of the hour. He stated that the world is overwhelmed by production of plastic and is using it more than it can recycle. Most of the plastic end up in our environment causing hazardous effects to humans, animals and nature, he added.
Ganesan said that people should reduce the use of plastic in their daily lives and called upon each and everyone to reuse as much as possible and also apprised them to recycle the plastic wastes that are generated. He said the most important is to educate oneself and people around us about the harmful effects of plastic and to collectively eradicate plastic pollution.
The Governor congratulated DFO, Kohima and his team for the initiative of “Clicktoplant.com”. He said that it is an innovative green initiative which has the potential in not just increasing the tree cover of our country but also in generating livelihood opportunities for the communities. He encouraged everyone to collectively make use of these green initiatives to free the world from plastic pollution.
Earlier, the Governor launched the website “Clicktoplant” and unveiled ‘Nino’ the Mascot. The first online plantation was also done by the Governor during the program.
The Governor also gave away the prizes to the winners of the oratorical contest for school students. The 1st Prize was bagged by a Class 3 student Vimeyono from Corragio School Kohima. The 2nd and 3rd were awarded to class 10 student Kelhouvinuo Caroline Rutsa from Living tree School, Tsiepugei and class 5 student Duve Khamo, a student of Rev. Dr Neiliezhü Usou Memorial School respectively.
Kohima Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rajkumar M, IFS also gave a short speech during the program. The program was also attended by Chairman, Ecotourism Management Committee (EMC) Touphema as well as students and teachers from Government High School Forest colony, Kohima.
The Governor planted a Ginkgo Bilabo tree in Raj Bhavan after the formal program to mark the occasion.
