New Delhi: Advisor reminds Ministry of Law & Justice about need for separate High Court for Nagaland

Nagaland Advisor for Law & Justice and Land Revenue T N Mannen met with officials from the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Law and Justice during two separate meetings in New Delhi, DIPR informed.

On 29th August 2023, Advisor T N Mannen held discussions with Ajay Tirkey, IAS, Secretary of the Department of Land Resource, Ministry of Rural Development, at his office in New Delhi. The primary focus of this meeting was to review the implementation of the digitalization scheme in Nagaland. During the discussion, certain shortcomings in the reports submitted from Nagaland were identified.

The Ministry officials expressed their readiness to visit Nagaland if necessary to assist in the effective implementation of the scheme. Detailed discussions also took place regarding the project’s specifics and guidelines.

The Advisor expressed his gratitude for the Ministry’s willingness to support the state, and it was agreed that senior officials from Nagaland would visit the Ministry/Department for further discussions on various aspects of the scheme.

Later, on 31 August 2023, the Advisor also met with S. K. G Rahate, IAS, Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Law and Justice, along with his officials. The focus of this meeting was to discuss the extension of infrastructure development for customary courts in the villages of Nagaland in line with the Gram Nyayalayas Act of 2008, as amended in 2019 to include Nagaland and other tribal states in the Northeast region of India.

Advisor T N Manen specifically requested the Justice Secretary and the officials present to consider a special dispensation for infrastructure funding for customary court construction at the village level as a centrally sponsored scheme. The Secretary, Government of India (GOI), assured that this request would be examined.

Additionally, the Advisor also reminded the Ministry about the need for a separate High Court for Nagaland.
