Nagaland MLA and Advisor for Transport & Technical Education, Temjenmenba on 2 September 2023 said that the development of terminal on the Tizu-Zungki river for inland waterways transportation will greatly benefit not just Nagaland but also the adjoining region, a report from PIB Kohima stated.
He was speaking at the roadshow on Global Maritime India Summit, 2023 (GMIS) being held in Guwahati, Assam. The event was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal.

Advisor Temjenmenba acknowledged the transformation in the northeast with the help of the Act East Policy adopted by the Government of India. “In Nagaland, the declaration of Tizu-Zungki River as National Waterways 101 has given us hope for development of inland waterways in the state,” he said, adding that the waterway will pave the way for transportation of people as well as cargo, resulting in growth in trade and commerce.
Temjenmenba further said that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways is considering the development of terminal on the Tizu-Zungki river by providing 100% financial support under Central Sector Scheme (CSS) and if the project comes through, it will “unlock a huge potential for growth and development for Nagaland along with the adjoining region”.
Earluer, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted how the role of inland waterways has evolved as an alternative mode of transportation, especially under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On this occasion, the Sonowal stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the inland waterways sector has received a tremendous boost as GoI has invested ₹5200 crores since 2014. This clean, efficient and economical mode of transportation will be pivotal in unlocking the economic potential of the hinterland of India, he said.
“By investing in the inland waterways and empowering our rich and complex waterways system, we are in the process of creating a collaborative ecosystem for the industry that will foster greater cooperation among our neighbouring countries. This is going to unlock huge trade and commerce potential for all the countries as well as states of India in the south Asia region,” the Union Minister stated.
