State level youth festival 2024 was held on September 26 at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima. Organised by the Department of Youth Resource and Sports (DYRS) in collaboration with NSDMA, the festival was graced by Inaugural guest Keoshu Yimkhiung. Cultural troops from the 16 district will be participating in the Festival.
In his speech, Yimkhiung stated the gathering marks the convergence of creativity, energy, and the indomitable spirit of young people from across the state. “This festival resonates deeply with our shared vision of empowering the next generation, fostering unity, and building a community that is not only aware of its rich cultural heritage but also prepared to face the challenges of the future,” said the Advisor.
As the youth engage in the various events and competitions, he encouraged them to remember that the festival is more than just a platform for showcasing talent. “It is a melting pot of ideas, where young minds come together to share their dreams, learn from each other, and contribute to the larger goal of building a stronger, more resilient community,” remarked Yimkhiung.
He added that the diverse activities lined up for this festival-from sports to cultural performances, from workshops to discussions —reflect the dynamic spirit of our youth. “Each event is an opportunity to learn, grow, and push the boundaries of what we can achieve together. It is in these moments that leaders are born, and it is from these experiences that lifelong friendships and networks are forged,” added the Advisor. He encouraged the participants to let their passion shine through in every performance, every match, and every discussion.
Anthony Ngullie, NCS, Secretary Deputy DYRS stated that the department is committed to the welfare and well being of the youths in the state and hence these kind of programmes are organized to encourage and initiate the youths in various activities for preparing them to be secure confident and good citizens of the state and the nation.
While the department is committed to such activities, he also thanked the sponsors, NSDMA for coming forward to help and support their initiatives.

Keren Rose Koza, Assistant Manager Media & Public Relations highlighted the importance of the role of the youth, risk reduction and disaster management. “More than half the world’s population, children and youth under age 30 stand to benefit the most from reducing the risk and impact of disasters. Often when disasters strike, children and youth experience disproportionately large impacts to their physical and mental health; nutritional needs; access to education; economic opportunities; exposure to violence as well as many other limiting side effects. Ensuring that their needs are met and their contributions are integrated into disaster reduction efforts is critical to upholding their rights,” said Rose.
She also stated that the NSDMA is a department that is focused on young people, as it believed the youth are the future of the state. The unique experiences, perspectives, and skill sets that the younger demographic add to help shape their communities become more resilient was also highlighted. “Young people have vital roles not just in disaster relief and response, but also in risk reduction, disaster preparedness, and more,” expressed Rose adding that in order to reach out to the youth, the NSDMA organizes various training programs specifically targeting the youths.
The first day of the festival witnessed Science fair, foll song competition, declamation, folk dance and science mela.
On the second day, a painting competition will take place at the same venue, after which all participants will head to RCEMPA Jotsoma for the Battle of the Bands and the valedictory program of the State Level Youth Festival 2024. Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, will be the special guest at the event.
