Affectionate and supportive relationship between siblings on badminton court inspires netizens

Mokokchung: Sungjemtemsu cares a lot for his younger sister, and so does Arenienla for her elder brother, their parents confirm

Eight-year-old Sungjemtemsu Jamir and six-year-old Arenienla Jamir, belonging to Chuchuyimpang Village, Mokokchung district, recently participated in the 5th Mokokchung Inter-School Badminton Championship 2024. They are students at Queen Mary Higher Secondary School.

Sungjemtemsu was awarded the title of Most Promising Player at the 5th Mokokchung Inter-School Badminton Championship 2024 in the amateur category for boys. He reached the semifinals in the Under-9 Boys Singles category, while his younger sister Arenienla won the Under-9 Girls Singles title.

However, the siblings got popular overnight not only because of their talents in sports but more because of their affection caught on video which has since gone viral on social media platforms.

Nagaland Tribune asked Sungjemtemsu why he was demonstrating backhand and forehand badminton techniques to his sister and he explained that he was reminding her of the techniques learned from their coaching classes and practices.

The boy said that although he lost in the semifinals, he wanted his sister to win the title and when his sister won, he was so happy that he kissed her cheeks, expressing his love and pride for her. Arenienla also expressed her gratitude for her elder brother’s guidance and their mutual love.

Netizens have also praised their parents for the inspiring relationship shared by the children. Their parents told Nagaland Tribune that the siblings deeply respect and love each other. “Sungjemtemsu cares a lot for his younger sister, and so does Arenienla for her elder brother,” they said. The parents also disclosed that the children have been into badminton since 2023, participating in the 4th Mokokchung Inter-School Badminton Championship for the first time,” they said.

Sungjemtemsu and Arenienla mentioned that their passion for badminton grew after participating in last year’s tournament. They have been attending various coaching camps organized by the Mokokchung District Badminton Association (MDBA) and are currently under the guidance of Temsuyanger and Nochet. They expressed their appreciation for both coaches and regularly practice at the Badminton Stadium after school.

Sungjemtemsu also told Nagaland Tribune that he and his sister watch badminton games on television and YouTube to enhance their skills and techniques. The siblings are inspired by Viktor Axelsen, the Danish badminton player who is currently the World’s Number One ranked Men’s Singles Player and and they aspire to become skilled players in the field of badminton in the future.
