The major wildfire that broke out in the Khonoma Dzükou area on Friday morning is said to have engulfed approximately 1.8 square kilometres of forest and wildlife habitat on the same day and continue to spread gradually.

150 youth volunteers including the SDRF, fire, police and fire personnel who went to the valley to attempt to contain the fire were reported to be unable to get close.

Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B Henok Buchem informed that due to the hostile terrain, isolation of the area and high risk involved, human intervention has become nearly impossible. In view of the situation, the district administration has requisitioned a helicopter with a Bambi bucket to conduct aerial firefighting operations starting December 14.

Despite the challenges, it was learnt that volunteers will be continuing their efforts, even as authorities stress safety concerns.

The fire is believed to have originated at Neibu Zie, a remote location deep inside the sanctuary. Authorities have traced the cause of the blaze to an illegal campsite used by a group of four young trekkers, who reportedly entered the protected area without permission. Officials confirmed that the trekkers are not residents of Khonoma village and the individuals have acknowledged their fault. They are the same trekkers who were rescued on Friday by community emergency responders.
