The Office of the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has issued a stern directive to local shops, ordering the immediate cessation of the sale of tobacco and other abusive substances within a radius of 100 parameters around all educational institutions in the Mokokchung district. This action comes in response to the alarming prevalence of such products being sold in close proximity to schools, raising both legal and ethical concerns.

In a press release dated August 8, 2023, the AKM emphasized that educational institutions bear the responsibility of creating a secure and healthy environment for students, safeguarding them from exposure to harmful substances. The sale of tobacco and abusive substance products near schools not only contravenes established regulations but also jeopardizes the well-being of students and contradicts the educational values upheld by the community.

The directive issued under the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003 section 6 B mandates that all shops cease and desist from selling any illegal substances within the designated radius. Failure to comply with this directive could lead to legal repercussions and other remedies available under the law.

Furthermore, the AKM has also turned its attention to food safety and transparency concerns within the district. Highlighting the lack of vital information such as manufacture dates and ingredients on food items, particularly those produced by home-based food manufacturers and bakeries, the AKM underscores the potential health risks such practices pose to consumers.

In a bid to ensure consumer well-being and promote transparency, the AKM has directed all Food Business Operators, especially home-based food manufacturers and bakeries, to adhere to stringent labelling standards outlined by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Mokokchung. The directive calls for accurate ingredient labelling, clearly marked expiration dates, and inclusion of manufacture dates on food products. This move aims to empower consumers with essential information, allowing them to make informed choices regarding the food they consume, while simultaneously fostering confidence and trust in local food establishments.

The AKM’s dual directives underscore the organization’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of students and consumers alike.
