Celebrating Independence Day, actor Akshay Kumar announced his return to Indian citizenship, putting to rest criticism about his Canadian citizenship.

Sharing an image of his Indian citizenship certificate on X (formerly Twitter), the 55-year-old actor declared, “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani” (Heart and citizenship, both Indian). Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!”

Akshay Kumar had faced scrutiny for his Canadian citizenship, especially after not casting his vote during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. His citizenship status also gained attention when he conducted a “non-political” interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the elections.

Kumar had previously attributed his Canadian citizenship to a career slump in the 1990s, marked by over 15 consecutive flops. He had later revealed his application for an Indian passport during a 2019 event.
