The Angami Students’ Union Shillong (ASUS) held its 55th Freshers’ Day Meet at Naga Community Hall, Nongrim Hill, Shillong on 9th September 2023 with Kevidezo Peter Rutsa, Vice President of BJP Nagaland, as the Guest Speaker, a press release, ASUS President Kevilhounyü Kuotsu informed.

Rutsa, in his address, exhorted the students the importance of prioritizing one’s study as the foremost, adding that “time and tide waits for no man while age is not always on one’s side”. He urged the student not to waste their time, rather to make haste in studies. “Studying is like a battle, the longer the fight goes on, the wearier the mind and body becomes,” he added.

Emphasizing on the importance of community, Rutsa reminded the students to keep in touch with their community as it is essential in one’s growth and inclusive of the learning process. The guest speaker also acknowledged the presence of the various tribal students’ union bodies of Shillong in the program and encouraged them to make it a tradition.

Khriesaneisa Rutsa, President of Angami Krotho Shillong, in his exhortations reminded the students that while they live and pursue their studies in Shillong, they need to show their gratitude as well as have good and cordial relation with the local people to pave the way for the younger generations.

He enlightened the gathering on the early inception of the Angami Students’ Union Shillong where the diaspora began during the 1920’s, when the Angamis started moving to Shillong to study. ASUS was then officially formed in 1968. Rutsa viewed that it was the elders of the Angami community who helped build a good image and relationship with the Khasis and opined that the Khasis still respect the Angamis and they do not hesitate to rent their houses to the Angamis.

The AKS president therefore urged the students to be ideal ambassadors of Angamis as well as Nagas. He also encouraged the students of their purpose of staying in Shillong, their priority and management of time.  Rutsa further encouraged them to keep in touch with their students’ leaders for any problems.

On the occasion, Mhalelhoubei Keyho and Mhalevinuo Solo were crowned ASUS Mr and Miss Freshers 2023 respectively.

The 55th Freshers’ Day Celebration was marked by performances and performance from special guest artist Mengu Suokhrie, Neikie-ü Yashü, Imkikumzuk Imsong and Thejakielie Levi respectively. A speech on behalf of the freshers was presented by Vikehenuo Kengurüse, welcome address delivered by the Vice President of ASUS, while the vote of the thanks was delivered by Peteneiu Talie, Assistant General Secretary, Angami Students’ Union Shillong.
