Anglo-Phom Dictionary – a publication by the Department of Art & Culture – was released by Additional Secretary, Home Department and member of Phom Literature Board, M Shayung Phom at a function held at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Art & Culture, Kohima on 25 August 2022.
Speaking on the occasion, M Shayung Phom said that the dictionary will encourage the younger generation to understand and preserve the Phom dialect which is diminishing presently. Phom emphasized that publishing such a book will promote Naga culture and heritage and will guide new learners and keep people engaged in Phom language.
Secretary, Art & Culture, Athel O Lotha, IAS during her introductory remark stated that the Anglo-Phom Dictionary is an outcome of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs program – Support to Tribal Research Institutes – which is implemented by the Department of Art & Culture. She said the main aim of the project was to document the current status of the language. She further said that the dictionary emerged as the cumulative works of different scholars, language experts, Phom Literature Board and the Department of Art & Culture.
Director, Art & Culture, Adela Moa in her vote of thanks said that it is an honor for the department to release the dictionary which is a landmark not only for the Department but also for the Phom community. She thanked the editors, Yanbeni Yantan and Dr Imlienla Imchen, who studied and systematically edited the dictionary, their two research assistants, Vikhosanü Kuotsu and Toshimenla Ao, and Field Assistant, Mola L. Ong.
Short speeches were given by Bongshen member, Phom Literature Board and Dr Mangnyau, Phom Union and Mola L Ong Field Assistant. A folk song was performed by Kohima Phom Union. The programme was chaired by Deputy Director, Art & Culture, Lampha Konyak.
The book is published by the Department of Art & Culture and edited by Yanbeni Yantan and Dr Imlienla Imchen. The book is priced at Rs 500/- and is available for sale at the Department’s book stall.
