The Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has declared non-cooperation with the Armed Forces in protest of the extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in Nagaland by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
“In compliance with the directives issued by the NSF, the AKM reiterates its strong stand against the extension of the AFSPA Act 1958, in Nagaland,” AKM’s President Lanutoshi Aier and General Secretary Satemmongba stated in a press release on Thursday.
Earlier in April 2024, the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) had condemned the extension of the Act that “has long been associated with egregious human rights violation, extrajudicial killings, and systematic abuses of power by the armed forces.”
AKM stated that the “draconian nature of this law has often led to human rights violation and has created an atmosphere of fear and distrust within our communities” and urged the Government of India repeal AFSPA in without any further delay.
Citing the example of the Oting incident in Mon district, AKM underscored the urgent need for the repeal of the “oppressive law” and for the authorities to address these issues swiftly to ensure the protection and well-being of the people of Nagaland.
“It is imperative that the government honors the rights and freedoms of all citizens and restores a sense of normalcy and security in the region,” AKM added.
