The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Wokha inaugurated its weekly sales day today at the APMC Wokha Complex, located near NH-61. Starting this Saturday, the sales day will be held every week from 7 a.m. onwards, with the aim of promoting local organic produce and strengthening cross-border trade between Nagaland and Assam.

The inaugural event was graced by the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Wokha, Echungbemo Erui, who attended as the special guest. In his address to the gathering, Erui emphasised the significance of the market in empowering the local farming community and enhancing the district’s economy.

Referring to Wokha as the “Land of Plenty”, he spoke on the region’s rich natural resources and underscored the importance of preserving its fertile land for future generations.

He also cautioned vendors against mislabeling non-organic products as organic, warning that such practices could harm the district’s growing reputation for authenticity. Encouraging community cooperation, Erui appealed to the public to recognise and fairly reward the hard work of farmers. He affirmed the district administration’s full support for traders and stakeholders participating in the initiative.

The sales day featured a variety of agricultural produce, including tomatoes sourced from Longkhum village, fresh organic leafy vegetables, and a wide range of local goods. In addition, traders from Assam brought in produce such as potatoes, tomatoes, green chillies, dry fish, and livestock including hens, ducks, and piglets. The exchange initiative aims to create a platform for both states to share agricultural goods not readily available locally, thus reducing dependency on distant markets.

Jacob Yanthan, Managing Director and CEO of the Nagaland State Agricultural Produce Livestock Marketing Board (NSAPLMB), expressed his appreciation to the traders from Assam for their collaboration. He reiterated that the interstate market was conceptualised not only to boost local economies but also to foster friendship and mutual support between Nagaland and Assam. Yanthan also revealed that further developments are planned for APMC Wokha and called for ongoing cooperation from all parties involved.

Representing the Assam traders, Sahidur Rahaman shared his optimism for the continued growth of trade between the two states. He expressed gratitude to the people of Wokha for their hospitality and urged the public to facilitate the smooth transport of goods by ensuring unimpeded routes to Nagaland.

On the opening day, a full truckload of produce from Assam was sold at the APMC Wokha market, while a corresponding truck carrying goods from Wokha was dispatched to Assam, marking the beginning of a two-way exchange of regional goods.
