UraCab, Nagaland’s first government-licensed app-based taxi aggregator, founded by CEO Keduolie Mere formally launched its services in Mokokchung on November 25.
Established in 2022, the platform operates on a model similar to Ola and Uber and has already completed its pilot phase in Kohima, where more than 150 drivers have been onboarded, over 1000 rides completed, and around 2500 users registered. The company is gradually expanding its footprint having recently launched in Kiphire with plans to cover all districts of Nagaland within the next three years and extend its services to the Northeast region in the next five years. The introduction of EV taxis and electric two-wheelers is also part of its upcoming initiatives.
Speaking during the launch, General Manager Keneilezo Rutsa emphasised that Nagaland has the potential not only to adapt to the digital era but also to lead the Northeast in developing technology-based solutions for local challenges. He highlighted that the State’s hilly terrain, limited public transport, and overstretched mobility network often leave commuters relying on personal vehicles, contributing to congestion and daily transport difficulties. UraCab, he said, aims to address these gaps by offering a structured, app-based system connecting drivers and passengers more efficiently.

Rutsa noted that the service’s success in Mokokchung will require coordination with district authorities and support from local stakeholders. To ensure clarity for drivers, he explained that all drivers must use smartphones to operate the app, and that fare structures will be discussed with the Regional Transport Authority and ANTA to align with local rates. Stressing that UraCab does not intend to disrupt existing local rates, he said the company will begin operations gradually while focusing on driver benefits and community cooperation.
He expressed confidence that Mokokchung, being a community-oriented town, will adapt well to the service and contribute to building a more connected and digitally enabled urban transport system.
ADC Atsungba Walling, during the launch of UraCab, highlighted the importance of customer satisfaction as the primary goal of this public utility service. He welcomed the initiative, noting Mokokchung as the third district in Nagaland to adopt the service and that such a venture is much needed in the town.
Walling emphasized that safety protocols must be a top priority for all drivers, as passengers’ safety depends entirely on them. He pointed out that many drivers are not fully aware of traffic rules, regulations, and proper driving etiquettes, and called for sensitization of the drivers.
He described the successful operation of UraCab as a collective responsibility, involving not just the company but the wider community. Public awareness and cooperation, he said, are crucial to the service’s success.
Acknowledging potential challenges, Walling expressed confidence that with joint efforts and adherence to safety standards, the venture could overcome difficulties and establish a smarter, safer urban mobility system in Mokokchung.
UraCab offers free registration for drivers at present, with no deductions or percentage charges. The platform provides accidental insurance in partnership with SBI, which also serves as its banking partner.
To ensure quality service, UraCab runs driver sensitization programs and educational initiatives,
including videos to help drivers use the app effectively. Drivers are monitored based on the number of
rides they complete and the ratings they receive from passengers after each trip. Using this assessment,
the top-performing driver is selected each month as “Driver of the Month.” Rewards for this recognition
include vouchers, car accessories, and other incentives.
For passengers, UraCab plans to introduce rewards through the app, such as cashback and points called “Ura Coins,” which can later be converted into money. Currently, UraCab’s operations are focused on Mokokchung Town, and hope to gradually expand to
nearby villages following demand. Regarding fare rates, UraCab will work closely with the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and the All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) to establish fair and locally appropriate pricing. The aim is to offer competitive rates for travelers while maintaining transparency and aligning with local standards.
