The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam arrested two engineers on charges of demanding and accepting bribe at Silchar on Wednesday. They have been identified as Nilanjan Das, In-Charge Executive Engineer (Agriculture), Cachar Division, Silchar and Junior Engineer Shyama Prasad Purkayastha.
Das, the main accused had allegedly demanded Rs. 50,000 as bribe from a person in the name of passing of bills and awarding contracts in future. The man, who is a supplier of agricultural machineries, complained to the directorate and a trap was laid, the Directorate said in its statement.

Accordingly, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption team caught Purkayastha, the accomplice of Das, red handed after he accepted bribe of Rs.20,000 from the complainant.

The directorate informed that Das was also apprehended, and a case has been registered against the two men under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) in this connection.
