In a tragic turn of events, the body of a 43-year-old Assam Rifles (AR) constable was discovered on early morning of June 6, within the premises of the AR composite hospital.
According to police sources, a case has been registered at Sovima Police Station and an investigation is currently underway. Preliminary findings by police and forensic experts suggest the possibility of suicide, though officials have stated that a conclusive determination can only be made following the post mortem and forensic reports.
It was also revealed that the deceased had been admitted to the hospital in the previous month. Authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has issued a strong and urgent call for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the brutal death of Tsalichum Sangtam, a rifleman serving with the 12th Assam Rifles. The incident reportedly occurred within the premises of the AR Composite Hospital in Shokhovi Village.
According to the USSC, Rifleman Tsalichum Sangtam, a native of Old Risethsi Village and son of the late Lichose Sangtam, was found dead inside the military medical facility with multiple stab wounds raising serious questions about the security and integrity of what is expected to be a highly secure area.
In a letter addressed to DGP Nagaland Rupin Sharma and military authorities, the USSC described the incident as a horrific and inexplicable act, emphasizing that it reflects grave lapses in security and accountability. The organization has demanded an immediate, impartial, and thorough investigation, urging officials to explore every possible angle, interview all potential witnesses, and examine all forensic evidence related to the case.
The USSC further called for a speedy and meticulous investigation into the circumstances of the death, detailed and official report of the investigation findings to be submitted to the USSC within a reasonable timeframe and full account of any security failures, along with assurances that such a breach will not happen again.
The USSC also stated that the Sangtam community is grief stricken and deeply disturbed and will not rest until justice is delivered, warning that any attempt to downplay or obscure the incident will face strong condemnation and action from the community.
The organization demands a prompt and decisive response, underscoring that justice for the late Rifleman Sangtam is a matter of grave importance to both the Sangtam people and the broader principles of justice and accountability.
