Assam Rifles will be organising the First Hav Mering Ao, Shaurya Chakra (Retd) Open Badminton Tournament under the Assam Rifles Civic Action Programme 2025–26 from January 28 to 31, 2026, at Mokokchung.
In this connection, a poster release ceremony for the tournament was held on December 17 at
Mokokchung. The poster was formally released by Maj Gen Manish Kumar, Inspector General, Assam Rifles (North). With this, the formal commencement of preparations for the event begins.
The programme was attended by around 300 people, including NCC students from various schools, civil dignitaries and local residents, along with about 50 badminton players from different age groups.
The tournament is being organized in honour of Hav Mering Ao, Shaurya Chakra, the oldest living veteran of Assam Rifles, in recognition of his service and dedication to the nation. The initiative also aims to encourage youth participation in sports and promote values such as discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Speaking on the occasion, senior officers of Assam Rifles highlighted the importance of sports in character building, physical fitness and fostering unity among the youth. It was also stated that the Hav Mering Ao, SC Open Badminton Tournament will be organised annually to provide a sustained competitive platform for young players in the region. The tournament is expected to bring together young shuttlers from across the region and give them a platform to compete and gain exposure.
