Assam Statehood Day celebrated at Raj Bhavan Kohima

Assam Statehood Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan Kohima on December 2 with Governor of Nagaland, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, gracing the occasion. The programme was organised under the spirit of the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative.

The programme began with a welcome address by Thavaseelan K, Commissioner & Secretary to the Governor. This was followed by a speech on Assam State by Dr Pallab Changkakoti, President, Kohima Sahitya Sabha.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor highlighted Assam’s rich heritage, cultural harmony, and its enduring contribution to the nation’s growth. He described Assam as a land symbolised by the mighty Brahmaputra and praised its ancient civilisations, vibrant traditions, and resilient people as true embodiments of India’s unity in diversity.

The Governor acknowledged Assam’s pioneering role in tea, oil, agriculture, and biodiversity conservation, along with its invaluable contributions to art, music, literature, and theatre. He also noted how festivals like Bihu and the sattriya heritage of Majuli reflect the state’s cultural vibrancy and unity.

Appreciating the Assamese community living across India, the Governor commended their efforts in preserving their cultural identity while contributing meaningfully to their adopted states, calling them ambassadors of Assam’s values of harmony, hospitality, and resilience.

Emphasizing the importance of such celebrations, he said they strengthen national bonds and reinforce collective commitment to peace, cooperation, and progress. He expressed confidence in Assam’s journey towards enhanced infrastructure, innovation, youth empowerment, and protection of its cultural and natural heritage.

Concluding his address, the Governor extended warm greetings to the people of Assam and all present, expressing hope that Assam Statehood Day would further strengthen bonds of friendship and the shared resolve to build a united and harmonious India.

The cultural segment of the programme showcased a vibrant display of Assam’s rich traditions. Assamese Bihu dance was performed by Astha Gogoi, while Assam Divas modern creative dance was presented by Sanjana Bordoloi. An Assam song (Bhupendra Sangeet) was beautifully rendered by Aradhya Bora. The Srishti Shil Nritya was performed by Shruti Sonowal Mech and Lovely Sonowal Mech, while the Bodo dance was presented by Anjali Boro and friends.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Kevingozo Visa, Under Secretary to the Governor.
