In an effort to foster a cleaner and healthier Kohima, the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) took a proactive stance by conducting a Cleanliness Awareness Drive on 22 July 2023. The drive, held under the theme “Cleaner Kohima, Healthier Kohima,” aimed to instil a sense of responsibility and promote hygienic living practices among citizens.

Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland, has been undergoing beautification initiatives by the authorities; however, the union observed a lack of collective effort from the citizens in maintaining cleanliness. In response to this concern, the ASU strategically placed 60 signage at various locations throughout Kohima town, urging citizens to take an active role in keeping the city clean and healthy.

The impactful signage displayed powerful messages such as “My Trash My Responsibility,” “Cleanliness starts from you,” “One who maintains cleanliness keeps away diseases,” and “Adopt Cleanliness as a lifestyle.” These slogans sought to resonate with the public, encouraging them to internalize the importance of cleanliness as a way of life.

Moreover, the ASU reinforced its “Students Code of Conduct” press release issued on 13 June 2023, by conducting an awareness drive focused on Government registered vehicles used for transporting students to and from schools in Kohima. During the drive, a total of 53 Government registered vehicles were approached with kind advice to prioritize the welfare of students and the general public.

While the union acknowledges that non-governmental organizations lack the authority to impose or enforce rules, they adopted a democratic approach to sensitize vehicle owners about the significance of using state resources responsibly. They appealed to the conscience of vehicle owners to refrain from utilizing the state’s resources for personal purposes and instead contribute to the well-being of the state.

Through a press release issued on 26 July, the ASU extends a heartfelt appeal to all concerned citizens to take the lead in maintaining the cleanliness of Kohima city. They also encourage the student fraternity to uphold responsible and positive actions, further propagating the message of a cleaner and healthier Kohima.
