Awareness program on mental health held at Hakushang, Government High school Tuensang

A mental health awareness program was held today at Hakushang Government High school Tuensang in its school campus. Yangkhumla, Clinical Psychologist, District Hospital Tuensang was the resource person for the event.

 

The Clinical Psychologist spoke on the importance of mental health where she sensitized the gathering that both physical and mental health are crucial for the overall well being of an individual. The need to know focus on mental health among students was highlighted with mental illness becoming an increasing concern among the students which affects their studies.

“Many young people struggle with their mental issues alone as they don’t have any ideas to approach for help or are afraid of what people might think,” said Yangkhumla emphasing that  having an open conversation and raising awareness around mental health is important.

Signs and symptoms of mental illnesses were highlighted such as anxiety, depression, stress, low self esteem, inability to do daily activities or unable to cope with problems.

The Clinical Psychologist also pointed out the statistics of mental illness where at least 150 millions suffer from mental health issues requiring active medical intervention. By the year 2020, depression has become the highest leading cause of death, where every 40 second one committed suicide due to mental health issues, said Yangkhumla.

She encouraged the students to cope up with stress through a calm mind and highlighted some tips for basic coping skills such as getting enough sleep, exercise, working on hobbies, practicing self care, meditation, counselling. More importantly spirituality is also another way to cope during stress as mental illness is students and teachers attended the programme.
