A one-day awareness programme on child rights, organised by the Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, was held at the conference hall, Medziphema City Centre, Chumuokedima on 12th March 2025.
Chairman, Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR), Alun Hangsing in his keynote address highlighted the significance of the awareness programme on child rights, history of child rights and how it came into being and why child rights are important. He also mentioned the ten fundamental rights for children. He said children are the backbone of the society and the future lies with them. Hangsing also emphasized on NSCPCR policies, laws, programmes and activities pertaining to children. He highlighted on how NSCPCR fights for child rights and shared different important child rights protection acts ensuring the safety of children.
Aying Wangsha, Member, NSCPCR highlighted the rights of children with regard to Rights to Education (RTE). She explained the rights of the education pertaining to children and how to avail the rights for the well-being of children. Akumla Longchar Member, NSCPCR gave an insight on understanding the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) and IIS implementation. She shared how the POCSO Act was enacted to protect from offense of sexual assault and protection of children, the key features of the POCSO Act, POCSO Act punishment, and purpose of the POCSO Act.

Lichani Murry, Legal Consultant NSCPCR, gave an overview on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. She shared on the core objective and principle ensuring rights, providing protection on juvenile Justice Act. She highlighted the main motive of the act which aims to provide for the care and protection treatment and rehabilitation of children which falls under rehabilitation of children which fall under the age of 18 years.
ADC Medziphema, P James Swu in his speech thanked the Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and encouraged them to conduct such programmes to spread awareness and sensitize the public.
An interactive session was conducted where in queries and suggestion were taken up and were answered by the members of the Commission. Mhaseto Rhakho, Project Coordinator Child Helpline, Chumukedima chaired the programme while vote of thanks was delivered by District Child Protection Officer, Chumukedima, Nikito Zhimomi.
Head of offices under Medziphema sub-division, MTC town councillors, VCC/Head GBs, representatives from schools, churches and CSOs attended the programme.
