1238 OST users has been registered under five centers in Mokokchung district, informed the District Programme Officer (DPO) and District Aids Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU) during the District level committee for Narcotic Coordination meeting which was held on October 3 at the DC’s Conference Room.
Further, thirteen individuals were arrested under six Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases. The meeting revealed a seizure of 82.32 grams (approx.) of Brown Sugar which was conducted during the period since the last NCORD meeting held on August 31.
“On the obstacles faced in the district, it was pointed out that bailing out of the accused individuals under NDPS immediately after being remanded for judicial custody proved to be a huge area of concern vis-à-vis curbing of substance abuse in the district,” informed the Committee.
The committeee also resolved to invite a representative from the District Judicial Court to attend the next NCORD meeting.Chaired by Chumlamo Humtsoe, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung Hq, the meeting discussed on the brief reports presented by members and departments on the activities and progress on prevention of drug/narcotics usage.

The meeting minutes reported that awareness programmes were carried out by the Police department in various wards of the Municipal area and other villages in Mokokchung.
Activities and programmes could be conducted, notified the District Education Officer, due to Mid-term examination in the month of September.
In his concluding remark, the Additional Deputy Commissioner suggested for convergence of various departments along with church bodies and other Civil Society Organisations to sensitize and create awareness in the district and work towards mitigation and eradication of the drug menace in the district. The awareness programs, according to the Additional DC, must focus on the younger generation to prevent them from getting trapped in the vicious cycle of substance abuse and addiction.
