Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Keny on Monday called upon students to be contributors and not just “takers” in the society.
Speaking at the introductory session of the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) 22nd Biennial General Conference at St. Xavier College Jalukie as the introductory guest, Kenye, who was a former president of the union (1981–82) recalled how the union took shape during its initial years and evolved into the present-day ANCSU. He said the union was formed in the interest of college students and took up many pressing issues.
He asserted that labour, simplicity, dedication, honesty, commitment, and hard work had enabled the then leaders to become who they are today, and urged students to remain rooted in the virtues of their ancestors and elders.

The minister called upon the Nagas and students in particular not to be mere takers but to give back to society and take up leadership with social responsibility.
Kenye also implored ANCSU to continue its efforts to bring students from the eastern region of the state into the fold, noting that Nagaland has a huge responsibility to bring about change, especially as it grapples with the challenge of drug abuse. He added that solving unemployment requires the support and cooperation of the younger generation and cannot be left to the government alone.
The minister also spoke about how the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) 1873, now known as the Inner Line Permit (ILP), came into being for the protection of the Nagas — to preserve their land and identity — which, he said, has been beneficial to the Naga people.
Further, Kenye exhorted the students to live good Christian lives and to do good in order to make the world a better place to live in.
A solidarity speech was delivered by Kibouwi Zeliang, general secretary of the Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland.
Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Rev. Dr. Fr. Francis S. Cherangaal, principal of St. Xavier College Jalukie, while Imnawabang T Longkumer, social and cultural secretary ANCSU introduced the conference dignitaries.
The programme, led by Temjennungsang Jamir, member of the organising committee, witnessed a cultural performance by Peren Government College (PGC), a special song by Patkai Christian College, and a presentation by General Secretary Kivinoka A Sema. Jienda Gangmei, Pastor of Rongmei Baptist Church Samziuram pronounced a prayer for the event.
