Rahul Gandhi led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has reached Arunachal Pradesh’s Capital Itanagar on Saturday after three days of intense drama in Assam. Earlier today, the Congress party filed an FIR in Lakhimpur after BJP activists allegedly threatened its workers, damaged vehicles and vandalized banners, flags and posters of the yatra. The Assam Police has however denied that there has not been any attack on vehicles and that it has made elaborate security arrangements for the yatra throughout the State.
The moment the yatra stepped foot on Assam on 18th January 2024, Rahul Gandhi launched an attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, calling him the most corrupt CM in India. Sarma had retaliated by calling the Gandhi family, the most corrupt family and attacked them for their “duplicate” surname. He further threatened to put a legal case on the party and make arrests if the yatra enters Guwahati city.
On Saturday, in its press conferences in Lakhimpur and New Delhi, the Congress reiterated that it is not scared but it is Sarma who is scared. The leaders also asserted that nothing can stop the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. They also said that the yatra had till now not faced such obstructions even when it went through BJP ruled States.
Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah mentioned to the media that the party is still awaiting clearance from the authorities and that it is requesting for the same route that BJP National President JP Nadda’s roadshow on 10th January 2024. Borah also informed that since the establishment of Guwahati Press Club in 1976, no politician has given a press conference inside the office but for the first time, GPC itself has requested Rahul Gandhi to visit its headquarters in Ambari for a press conference.
Further, Congress General Secretary (Communication) Jairam Ramesh informed the media in Lakhimpur that while the inauguration of Ram temple is taking place in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, on 22nd January 2024, in Assam, Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Bordowa ‘Batadrava’ Than in Nagaon, the birthplace of the great Assamese saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardev.
After that a public meeting will be organized in Kaliabor in which Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi will address the public.
On Saturday, Kharge too condemned the “shameful” attack on the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra by “BJP goons” in Lakhimpur, Assam. Stating that the BJP wants to subjugate the people’s voices and hijack Democracy, Kharge asserted that Congress will “not be cowed down by this tactic of attack and intimidation employed by the BJP Government in Assam, which is responsible for this.”
Kharge further said that the party will take appropriate legal action against the “BJP stooges” and remarked that the party’s fight and commitment for “People’s NYAY is unstoppable.”
Addressing the huge turn out at Itanagar, Rahul Gandhi claimed that corruption, unemployment and inflation are at their peak in Arunachal Pradesh and assured that he will raise these issues in New Delhi on behalf of the people of the State.
The Yatra will be back to Assam on Sunday.
