Kazan: PM Modi calls for cooperation among partner countries to counter terrorism and terror financing

Speaking at the Closed Plenary of the 16th BRICS Summit at Kazan, Russia, on 23rd October 2024, Prime Minister Modi stressed that as a diverse and inclusive platform, BRICS’ approach must remain people centric and that it must give the message to the world that it is not a devisive one but one that works in interest of humanity.

PM Modi stated that at a time when the “world is facing pressing challenges such as wars, economic uncertainty, climate change and terrorism”, there are high expectations of BRICS and reminded that the organisation can play a positive role in all areas.

“We support dialogue and diplomacy, not war,” PM Modi stated.

He called for cooperation among the partner countries to counter terrorism and terror financing and asserted that there is no place for double standards. “We need to take active steps to stop radicalization of youth in our countries”, he added.

Further, the Prime Minister said that the BRICS countries must raise its voice “collectively and in a united manner” for reforms of global institutions institutions such as the UN Security Council, Multilateral development banks, and the WTO. He also called to work together on the long pending matter in the UN of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. He also stressed on working on global regulations for cyber security and for safe and secure AI.

“The BRICS grouping, created by the confluence of different viewpoints and ideologies, is a source of inspiration for the world, fostering positive cooperation,” he said and added that this quality and BRICS spirit are attracting other countries as well to the forum.

The 16th BRICS Summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” is being attended by its founding countries – Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates are also attending the Summit for the first time.
