The Centre for Development Initiatives (CDI) celebrated International Women’s Day at D Block Panchayat Hall with a gathering of domestic workers, highlighting the theme “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.” The programme aimed to empower women, raise awareness about their rights, and encourage collective action for social change.
Resource speaker Rheituohunuo Whuorie, Project Coordinator of Child Helpline Kohima, emphasized the importance of protecting women’s rights, including fair wages, equal access to education, personal safety, and timely medical care. She also spoke about the history of International Women’s Day and the continued struggles faced by women in society.
Highlighting issues faced by victims of abuse, Whuorie noted that in many places in India, including Kohima, cases often remain unseen and unheard, particularly when the perpetrators are family members or relatives. She said the desire to protect family reputation and the image of the accused frequently leads to silence, making victims more vulnerable and allowing abuse to continue unchecked.
She urged participants to speak out against violence and injustice, stating that silence only enables abuse. She encouraged individuals to act if they witness or learn about such situations and work toward building a safer and more supportive society.
