CGWB organises training program on local groundwater issues and participatory management at MCTE

Mokokchung: Program aims to equip participants with valuable insights to ensure sustainable management groundwater

Mokokchung College of Teacher Education (MCTE) played host to a significant training program focusing on “Local Groundwater Related Issues and Participatory Groundwater Management.” The event, which took place on Friday, was organized and sponsored by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), North East Region, Guwahati operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

The Chief Guest, Dr. T. Alemla Longkumer, Principal MCTE shed light on one of the college’s primary goals: “Conserving the environment and thereby the augmentation of water sources, and the establishment of a Water Recharge reservoir on the college premises.” She urged each individual to take responsibility in preserving and conserving the natural water resources for our future, as water is the elixir of life, without which there can be no social and economic prosperity.

Sutemo Kikon, Executive Engineer of the Water Resources Department, Mokokchung, as the Guest of Honour, highlighted the pressing water stress concerns faced not only by India but also the state of Nagaland and Mokokchung in particular. Kikon elaborated on the commendable efforts undertaken by the District Water Resources Department and underscored the necessity of interdepartmental collaboration for sustainable water conservation.

Delving into the technical facets of the program, Dakshina Rabha, Officer in Charge of the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), State Unit Office, Shillong, Meghalaya, detailed the integral responsibilities of the CGWB in training, reporting, and documenting groundwater in the North Eastern Region. This essential work contributes to the augmentation, conservation, and preservation of groundwater, ensuring its sustainable and safe availability to all.

The training sessions covered a spectrum of topics, with resource persons sharing their expertise. Tiamenba Longshir, AHG, CGWB, NER, elucidated “Hydrological Concept and Aquifer Information System.” Bipul Vishal, STA (Hg), CGWB, NER, delved into “Rain Water Harvesting and Artificial Recharge.” V. Kezo, Scientist C, CGWB, NER, provided insights into “Water Quality Issues and Its Impact on Human Health,” while Anenuo Pienyu, Scientist C, CGWB, NER, expounded on “Hydrogeology of Nagaland with Special Reference to Spring Water.”

The program culminated with a comprehensive summary of the topics presented, delivered by Dakshina Rabha. Attendees expressed gratitude for the knowledge shared and enjoyed a brief interlude of light refreshments.

The event underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing water-related challenges and equipping participants with valuable insights to ensure the sustainable management of this precious resource.
