The Chakhesang and the Lotha tribes were adjudged winners of the State Level Tribal Tug of War and Tribal Cuisine Competition organised by the Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Department of Tribal Affairs, Nagaland, on 22nd November 2024 at NSF Solidarity Park on the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas and IEC campaign for Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA- JGUA).
In the State Level Tug of War event, out of sixteen competing tribes, the Chakhesang bagged the champion, while Sumis and Angamis secured the 1st and 2nd runner up respectively.
In the Tribal Cuisine Competition, among the sixteen competitors representing their tribe, the Lothas came out as the Champion and Pochury and Sumis secured the 1st and 2nd runner up respectively.
The judges in the Tribal Cuisine were Asano Angamis, Sr. Chef at Naithu Group, Chenti Phom, Proprietor of DUDA Guest House, Kohima and Tokupu Kathu, Proprietor of Ancestral Cuisine, Kohima.
The winners were awarded certificates with cash prizes. The event was funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.
The event was witnessed by Secretary, Department of Tribal Affairs, Angelina Tajen, Director, Department of Tribal Affairs, Seno Phom, Commandant 13th AR, Col. Tarun Rana, the President, Nagaland Tug of War Association (NTWA), Dr. Er. Vekho Swuro, department officials and tribal hohos.
Janjatiya Gaurav Divas is celebrated to honor the contributions of tribal communities, especially in India’s freedom struggle. Celebrated very year on 15th November, the occasion highlights the important role of tribal groups in preserving India’s heritage and advancing its progress.
Launched on 2nd October 2024, the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan has an outlay of over ₹79,156 crore. This ambitious program aims to address critical gaps in social infrastructure, health, education, and livelihood development across approximately 63,843 tribal villages. The Abhiyan benefits over 5.38 crore tribal people across 549 districts and 2,911 blocks, spanning 30 states and Union Territories (UTs). It integrated 25 interventions across 17 ministries and departments of the Government of India.
