The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) in collaboration with the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society organised a Seminar on HIV & STI Awareness on March 28, 2024, at Union Christian School, Pfutsero. The seminar aimed to educate students about HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections), their prevention, and the importance of early detection, stated CSU President Pfhülo Sara and General Secretary Kuzoto Swuro in a press release.
Pfhülo Sara, in the keynote address, emphasised the importance of awareness and education in preventing the spread of HIV and STIs. He highlighted the role of young students in disseminating correct information and breaking stigmas associated with these infections.
The main session was led by Hierhotho Kajiri, DIS DISHA, Phek who provided in-depth information on causes, symptoms, and transmission of HIV and STIs, preventive measures, including safe practices and medical interventions, the importance of early testing and treatment and addressing misconceptions and stigmas related to HIV/AIDS.
An interactive discussion followed the presentation, where students shared concerns, asked questions, and gained clarity on various aspects of HIV and STI prevention. This session provided a platform for open dialogue, encouraging students to be proactive in their health choices.
The event witnessed participation from students of various high schools and higher secondary schools, with an attendance of more than 150 students.
The session was chaired by Rhilo Chiero, Finance Secretary of CSU and began with an invocation by Medo Lomi, teaching faculty of UCS Pfutsero.
As part of the initiative, a voluntary blood testing drive was conducted, allowing students to undergo HIV screening and counseling. This step aimed at promoting early detection and reducing stigma associated with HIV testing.
The organizers expressed their gratitude to all participants, speakers, and volunteers for their contributions in making the seminar a success.
